would have been missed. Further, ethnic differences in incidence trends have only been observed in childhoodALLand are not present in other childhood cancers (eg, childhood brain tumors), suggesting that changes in ethnic classification are unlikely to be solely responsible for trend differences. In utero exposure to factors such as tobacco are likely to have remained stable or decreased in prevalence during this period. Other suspected risk factors for childhood leukemia that may explain the increase in incidence in Hispanic children, such as childhood atopic conditions, pesticide exposure, and maternal and child weight, have increased during this period, but may not be specific to Hispanic children and require further evaluation. Large, well-designed epidemiologic studies of childhood leukemiawithdiverse ethnic backgrounds, such as theCaliforniaChildhood Leukemia Study, seek to further elucidate the reasons for the observed increases in incidence rates among Hispanic children in the last 2 decades.

P29: The Role of Platelet Granules in Neuroinflammation

Platelets are known to contribute to vascular pathologies, however, their role in inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system (CNS), such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and its mouse model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), is thus far poorly defined. Although there is emerging evidence that platelets might accumulate in the CNS parenchyma along with an increased activation ...

Munc13-4 is a limiting factor in the pathway required for platelet granule release and hemostasis.

Activation-dependent platelet granule release is mediated by integral membrane proteins called soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptors (SNAREs) and their regulators; however, the mechanisms for this process are ill-defined. To further characterize platelet secretion, we analyzed the function of platelets from Unc13d(Jinx) mice. Platelets from these animals...

Absence of Platelet Phenotype in Mice Lacking the Motor Protein Myosin Va

BACKGROUND The motor protein myosin Va plays an important role in the trafficking of intracellular vesicles. Mutation of the Myo5a gene causes Griscelli syndrome type 1 in humans and the dilute phenotype in mice, which are both characterised by pigment dilution and neurological defects as a result of impaired vesicle transport in melanocytes and neuroendocrine cells. The role of myosin Va in pl...

First characterization of platelet secretion defect in patients with familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis type 3 (FHL-3).

Recent major improvement in long-term survival of younger patients with multiple myeloma. First characterization of platelet secretion defect in patients with familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis type 3 (FHL-3) Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL), a rare auto-somal recessive disorder of lymphocyte cytotoxicity, is caused by mutations in genes encoding perforin (FHL-2) or pr...

Syntaxin 8 Regulates Platelet Dense Granule Secretion, Aggregation, and Thrombus Stability*

Platelet secretion not only drives thrombosis and hemostasis, but also mediates a variety of other physiological and pathological processes. The ubiquitous SNARE machinery and a number of accessory proteins have been implicated in regulating secretion in platelet. Although several platelet SNAREs have been identified, further members of the SNARE family may be needed to fine-tune platelet secre...
